Window Eyes, Window Heart, Window Mind: Chapter 1.5

Don’t get me wrong.  Crystal wasn’t perfect when it came to finding the right guy.  She just handled things a little differently.  She didn’t let a guy fool her, nor did she allow him to think he was fooling her.  Crystal had a boyfriend back in Del Sol Valley named Brian.  Brian was a basketball player at DSVC.  I was surprised when Crystal told me, because I always thought that athletes were the biggest players in the world.  I asked her about it one day while we were at the Computer Lab in the Library.
“Girl how can you trust Brian in Del Sol with all those hootchies?”
Crystal turned away from the computer screen to look at me.  “Depends on what you mean by trust.”

“You know… trust, knowing that he’s not going to be out there screwing around.”
“In that case, I don’t trust him as far as I could kick him.”
We laughed.  “Well how can you be with him when you don’t trust him?”
“Girl, I haven’t been with no Brian.”
            “You mean you never…”
“Hell, no.  I don’t know where he’s been or who he’s been with.”
“Well you don’t know that about any guy.”
“Exactly.” She went back to her internet search.

I thought about it for a minute.  “Crystal, you mean you’re still…” I lowered my voice and leaned closer to her, “a virgin?”
“Exactly.” She didn’t look at me.
“Are you kidding me?” I said louder than I intended.  Everybody began looking at us.  I lowered my voice again. “Why?”
She looked at me.  “I haven’t met anybody worthy of it yet.”
I didn’t have anything to say to that.  I thought back to my first and he damn sure wasn’t worthy.  I looked at Crystal with a new respect.
“You go girl.” I whispered turning back to my computer.
            Crystal smiled.

A week later, Crystal caught Brian cheating.  It was a Friday.  I was at work on a call with a prospective student.  Crystal walked into the Chemistry Department.  I didn’t expect to see her.
“Girl, what you doing here?” I forgot I was on the phone, so I apologized to the caller and held my finger up to let Crystal know I would be right with her.
I finished the call.  “What you doing here?”
“I need you to come to Del Sol with me.”
            “Why?”
“I still can’t get in touch with Brian.” The office phone rang.  Crystal looked at it.  “You better answer that.”
I waved the call off.  “They’ll call back.” I paused.  “Why do we need to go up there?”
“I need to know what’s going on.”
“You know what’s going on.” The phone stopped ringing.
“I know but he needs to know that I know.”

“Ok.  I get off at three today.” A student walked in.
“Ok girl.  Go ahead and take care of her.  I’ll meet you at my room around four.” She began to leave.
“Wait.  How we getting to Del Sol?”
“Well, I have two hours to figure that out, don’t I?” Crystal said smiling.
I laughed. “Ok girl.” I said before greeting the walk-in.

At three, I left work and went to my room to pack a few things up.  Shante drove to Del Sol earlier that day.  She was the only person I knew that had a car.  I knew Crystal would figure out a way to get us there though.  I grabbed my bag and went up to her room.
She was packing up a few last minute things.
            “So how we getting there?”
“You know that girl Dizzy, the girl who lives down the hall?”
“Yeah.  The one with the cat bones hanging over her bed who wears black all the time?”
“Well she’s going home this weekend, so we’ll ride up with her.”

I shook my head and sat down on Crystal’s bed. “I don’t know about that.”
“Come on girl.  Dizzy’s cool.  I go over there and hang out every blue moon or so.”
“Crystal, she has cat bones hanging over her bed.”
“So.  You have Shante with her 7-11 legs next to yours.”
            “Seven-eleven legs?”
“Yep.  Opened 24 hours a day.”
I didn’t even bother to ask Crystal what that had to do with Dizzy’s cat bones.  We were too busy cracking up all the way to Dizzy’s room.
