The ride up to Del Sol Valley wasn’t so bad. Dizzy seemed to be a decent person after all. That is if you could see past her black hair, black lipstick, white make-up and the freaky music she played. And I’d just never seen a car interior that looked so much like a coffin in my life. She dropped us off on the DSVC campus. Luckily neither of us over-packed.
I didn’t ask Crystal, but I wondered how we were going to get back to Britchester, or even more immediate than that, how we were going to get off the DSVC campus. Crystal was on a mission, so I didn’t question her.
Crystal led me to a tall building that I assumed were the dorms where Brian stayed. We entered the building. We took the elevator up to the fourth floor. We walked down a long hall until we got to his room. Crystal knocked on the door. There was no answer. She knocked again. After knocking three times she turned. “Damn. He’s not here.” She led me back to the elevator.
We left the building and walked all the way across campus until we got to the gym. We could hear basketballs bouncing. We entered. I’d never met Brian in person, so I wasn’t sure what he looked like. I looked around to see if I’d recognize him from the pictures Crystal had shown me of the two of them. I had no luck, but Crystal spotted him right away. I followed her gaze to the bleachers. There were three guys sitting near the bottom of the bleachers. One guy was sitting behind a girl with his arms around her. I could barely see his face because he was bent down kissing the girl on the neck.
Crystal walked straight to the bleachers. No one paid attention as she climbed up and sat down a few rows above the guy and girl. I followed.
“Girl that’s him right there.” She finally said.
“The one with the girl?”
“Hell yeah.”
“What are you going to do?”
“You’ll see.”
Brian was now rubbing the girl’s face and upper chest area. “Girl, he’s all out in the open with it, isn’t he?” I said.
“Shh.” Crystal put her finger up to her lips. “I’m going to move down so I can hear what he’s saying.”
She stood up and moved down to the row right behind Brian. I followed her. We leaned in until we could hear what was being said.
“Girl, you’re so fine. You know that?” Brian said. “I can fall in love with somebody like you.”
“Serious?” The girl smiled.
“I’m serious. All these other girls don’t have nothin’ on you.” He leaned in to kiss her.
“Girl he lying.” Crystal suddenly blurted out.
Brian and the girl turned and looked. Brian jumped up when he recognized Crystal. Apparently, the two other guys that were sitting there recognized Crystal as well, because they appeared to be very amused.
“He used to tell me that same crap.” Crystal stood up.
“Crystal! Hey baby. What you doin’ here?”
By now, Brian’s friends were laughing so hard that I thought they would fall out of the bleachers. Brian ignored them.
“Don’t talk to me right now. I’m talking to your little friend here.” Crystal looked at the girl and continued. “Girl he ain’t nothin’ but a trifling dog.”
“Who’s this?” The girl asked.
“Oh, I’m sorry. Let me introduce myself. I’m Crystal. I’m the last girl he told those lies to. Luckily I didn’t believe his sorry ass.”
Brian looked from the girl to Crystal. “Crystal, I was just-“
Crystal held her hands up. “I don’t want to hear from you.” She looked at the girl. “ And your name is?”
By now, the girl’s friends had walked over...probably to defend her in case something popped off. I stood up for the same reason.
The girl’s voice was trembling. “Um…I’m Melissa.”
“Hi Melissa. Girl, save yourself and leave this fool alone.”
Melissa glared at Brian before leaving the bleachers and walking out of the gym. Her friends followed her.
Brian’s friends had now gotten up and were running across the gym to the other teammates to let them know what was going on.
Crystal also started to leave. I followed her down the bleachers. Brian was foolish enough to follow as well.
“Hey Crystal. Wait up. I was just…”
Crystal turned around. “Brian I’ve seen and heard all I needed to. I know what you were just doing. I don’t need to talk to you. My job here is done. I’m going home.” Crystal turned around and we left the gym.
When we got outside, we could hear Brian’s teammates laughing and giving him a hard time. Crystal and I started cracking up. “Girl did you see his face? That’s what I live for.” She said.
“What?”
“Seeing their faces when they know they’re wrong.”
I didn’t get what Crystal meant at the time. I did notice that for the rest of the weekend she was in a very satisfied mood. She didn’t even appear to be upset that Brian had been cheating on her.
